Title:

Entanglements between light and free electrons: concepts and the path forward.

Abstract:

Photonic-based quantum information is perhaps the only mature quantum technology today, primarily used for quantum cryptographic communication. Free electrons, which in dedicated instruments can be focused down to the atomic scale, well below the optical wavelength, offer an exciting platform for considering novel ideas motivated by photonic quantum technologies.

My talk targets the entanglement between free electrons and photons. First conceptually, discussing the properties of such an entanglement; second, experimentally, describing the progress made thus far and other related phenomena of electron-light coupling.

In the future, dressing electrons with quantum-optical information may allow their transfer to individual nanoscopic quantum systems, thus expanding the scope of quantum technology and shrinking their footprint considerably.
